LEONARDTOWN, Md. – August 12, 2016 – Leadership Southern Maryland (LSM) announces the launch of its web-based projects archive. Projects to benefit the Southern Maryland Region are taken on by groups in each LSM executive program.
Working primarily through nonprofit organizations to identify project opportunities, LSM executive program classmates work together with the nonprofit or other community organization to complete a project with lasting impact. One example of a class project was the Class of 2011’s partnering with Cove Point on a marsh grass planting that restored shoreline and improved marsh habitat for wildlife. Another was by the Class of 2014, who partnered with the St. Mary’s Watershed Association and other concerned citizen organizations to set oyster spat in the St. Mary’s River to help build an oyster sanctuary in that river.
This year’s LSM graduating class took on eight community projects: one was building a communications plan for the Southern Maryland Job Source in Waldorf, Md.; another was an educational website for high school or college students looking to find a career in the defense industry. Another project was aimed at raising awareness by healthcare and pharmaceutical professionals of opiate/heroin abuse. An educational project partnered with FLOW Mentoring; another proposed electric vehicle plug-in stations be considered by county commissioners. A sixth project was creating the “Help is Here” campaign with website for victims of domestic violence. A seventh project for the Class of 2016 was done in partnership with the Arc of Southern Maryland and resulted in a book library for the Arc. The eighth project was to create and host a 12@12: Lunch ‘n Learn event for the region with the topic of Diversity & Multiculturalism on October 12, 2016, at 12 p.m. with a location to be determined soon.
The projects are summarized on the LSM Projects Archive at http://leadershipsomd.org//programs/projects-archive.
Each spring, LSM solicits proposals from nonprofit organizations with projects to be considered by the incoming LSM class.
