LEONARDTOWN, Md. – May 28, 2021: On May 13, 2021, the Leadership Southern Maryland (LSM) Class of 2021 participated in the seventh of nine educational sessions for the LSM Executive Program. This session’s topic was education in the region.
The session was held at the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Velocity Center in Indian Head. Local leaders including Mayor Brandon Paulin as well as representatives from CSM and the Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division were on hand to welcome the class. LSM Class of 2020 graduate Thomas Brewer proceeded to set the tone for the day with a presentation on the history and evolution of education. This was followed by a panel discussion with regional educators who shed light on the challenges and successes of educating students during the pandemic. The class also had an opportunity to further explore pandemic learning during a question and answer session with students from St. Mary’s County Public Schools.
The latter part of the program session featured Southern Maryland leaders in education. Executive Program participants met with all three superintendents from the tri-county area as well as the presidents of both College of Southern Maryland and St. Mary’s College of Maryland. This allowed for discussion of critical topics including school funding, teacher retention, and how community members can better support education. That concept was fine-tuned during the day’s final presentation on internship opportunities and partnerships in the region.
