LSM Feature: Letters from Leaders |
LSM's new monthly series features real stories, insights, and reflections from leaders across Southern Maryland. Our current theme, “Leading from Where You Are,” explores the many ways leadership happens in everyday moments.
Follow along in our newsletter and on social media, and be part of the conversation each month. In September we’ll bring these lessons to life with a special live event: The Leadership Table with Matt Scassero. |

Executive Program Gets Up Close and Personal with Public Safety |
The Executive Program Class of 2025 went behind the scenes of Southern Maryland public safety programs on April 3 to learn about the operations and critical issues of tri-county law enforcement and fire and rescue services. The group met at the University of Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute - Southern Maryland Regional Training Center in La Plata.
Jay Mattingly LSM ‘20, Training & Quality Assurance Coordinator, St. Mary’s County Department of Emergency Services; Chris Breedlove LSM ‘18, Chief of Zoning Enforcement for Calvert County; and Lt. Robert Selkirk, LSM '24, Calvert County Sheriff's Office facilitated an action-packed day of demonstrations that gave the executives a taste of what it’s like to be on the front lines of public safety.
Participants went behind the scenes of Charles County 911 Call Center operations and observed a firefighting demo by members of the Waldorf, Prince Frederick, and Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Departments. Instructors at the Southern Maryland Criminal Justice Academy demonstrated SWAT and K-9 operations and put volunteer participants through firearm training simulations.
A continuing theme of discussion was the challenge of recruiting and retaining public safety personnel in Southern Maryland. Sheriff Ricky Cox (Calvert), Sheriff Troy Berry (Charles), and Sheriff Steven Hall, LSM'18 (St. Mary’s) described workforce and other needs in Southern Maryland and their efforts to work closely with the community to meet those challenges.
"I really appreciated hearing from the Sheriffs representing the three counties," said Tiffany Barber, founder and executive director of Poeima Movement in Waldorf. "Meeting them and learning about the challenges they face was incredibly insightful. Touring the 911 building and learning about the various roles involved in emergency response gave me a deeper appreciation for how these systems work together. Altogether, the day gave me a much broader and clearer understanding of public safety operations across our region."

The class was welcomed to the AeroPark and TechPort by Katherine Stormont, St. Mary's County Economic Development Specialist; Ken Reed, St. Mary's County Regional Airport Managing Member; and Rick Tarr, Southern Maryland Tech Bridge & Tech Transfer Office Director. LSM Program Manager Dominic Fragman moderated a roundtable discussion of Southern Maryland industries on the leading edge of innovation that featured a remarkable panel of presenters: -
Thereasa Black, founder and CEO of Bon Appésweet, a company that produces all-natural chocolate bars using dates instead of sugar and only two to four organic, plant-based ingredients
-
Jeremy Bradford, president and CEO of CalvertHealth, recognized by Modern Healthcare as one of its Innovators for 2024
-
Dr. Justin Stine, Assistant Research Scientist and Director of Remote Sensing and Microsystems, A. James Clark School of Engineering / MATRIX Lab, USMSM, who has designed and developed autonomous microsystems for sensing applications, including wireless sensing platforms for healthcare monitoring in the gastrointestinal tract
- Kristine Kryszton, Human Resources Director, Story Cannabis in Mechanicsville, an innovator in farming methods and advancements in medical cannabis
The class enjoyed a tour of the AeroPark Innovation District that included stops at AIRtec, the University of Maryland UAS Research and Operations Center (UROC), and the University System of Maryland at Southern Maryland SMART Building. The tour culminated in lunch at Bird Dog Bistro in the Airport Terminal, courtesy of our sponsor, the St. Mary's County Department of Economic Development.
Shaniqua Cousins LSM ‘22, operations officer at NAVAIR and founder of Shaniqua Cousins World Group LLC, kicked off the afternoon with an energizing presentation on thriving in stressful environments. Organizational transformation specialists Sidi Zeid Chleuh and JC Martin of Peak Performance Solutions took the class on a deeper dive into strategies for nurturing innovation and building resilience in teams.
Special thanks to TechPort for their wonderful hospitality and to the amazing team at the St. Mary's County Department of Economic Development -- Chris Kaselemis, Kellie Hinkle, and Katherine Stormont -- for helping us design and implement such a high-impact experience! |
