LSM Enjoys Holiday Warmth

 with the Vassallo Family

LSM is grateful to Leadership Council member Linda Vassallo, LMd ’07, husband Chris, and daughter Allison, for opening their lovely home to us for LSM's annual holiday party, December 5th.  As always, our fellowship was the best part. Linda's egg nog was pretty compelling, too, though.

Wishing the Vassallo's and all of you a season that is merry and bright!

Executive Program Examines

the Blueprint for Maryland's Future with Teachers and Students

Calvert High School teacher Olivia White shares her experiences as a new teacher in Southern Maryland. Also pictured, left to right: St. Mary’s Ryken High School Advancement Consultant Amy Cricchi, teacher Deacon Ken Scheiber, senior Nikolos Kyritsopoulos, and senior Emilie Garrabrant; Calvert High School teacher Dr. Nathan Kimbro and sophomore Michael Bowles; and Leonardtown High School senior Liam Earhart.

The Executive Program Class of 2025 met with higher education leaders, teachers, and students on December 5th to discuss implementation of the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Act, legislation passed in 2021 to enhance Maryland's public school system. Presenters placed special focus on Pillars 2 and 3, efforts to strengthen pipelines of high-quality teachers and college- and career-ready students. The session was held at the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Prince Frederick Campus.

Whereas early conversations centered mostly on funding and curricula, teachers and students spotlighted the importance, in our fast-paced, busy world, of investing time in strengthening relationships with students to promote their success.

"There is no greater calling, in my opinion, than the (mind and heart) education of our young people," said Dr. Nathan Kimbro, a special education teacher at Calvert High School in Prince Frederick. "We are at a critical time where the landscape of public education is changing rapidly, and the needs of young people are growing exponentially. It will take entire community engagements to address all of the needs of our young people and our educators."

"Honestly, I was not initially excited about a full-day session on education," said Stephanie St. Peter, Director of Talent Acquisition at ASEC, a defense contractor in Lexington Park. "I knew I’d gain some insights, but my kids are out of the local school system now, and education isn’t as much of a hot button of mine. Fast forward ... I left the session with a fresh perspective on education as a whole and a deepened appreciation for the teachers and administrators who work tirelessly to provide our local children with the best possible education."

Heartfelt thanks to Program Advocate Karen Smith Hupp, LSM '15, for designing another excellent Education Session.
