New LSM Feature: Letters from Leaders

LSM's new monthly series features real stories, insights, and reflections from leaders across Southern Maryland. Our current theme, “Leading from Where You Are,” explores the many ways leadership happens in everyday moments.

Follow along in our newsletter and on social media, and be part of the conversation each month. In September we’ll bring these lessons to life with a special live event: The Leadership Table with Matt Scassero.

Multigenerational Workforce Forum

Uncovers Possibilities for Thriving

in  Southern Maryland

Thanks to all who participated in our Southern Maryland Multigenerational Workforce Forum on February 26th! We learned a lot about each other and about our needs and aspirations for even better quality of life in Southern Maryland: e.g., needs for more cross-generational mentoring, affordable housing, community events, and more collaboration and outreach to get information out about resources that are available.

Special thanks to facilitators JC Martin and Shane Murphy of Peak Performance Solutions for helping us uncover more of what is on our hearts and minds regarding possibilities for professional and personal thriving in Southern Maryland.

Extreme gratitude to our host, the University System of Maryland at Southern Maryland, and our additional partners, KBR, the MIL Corporation, The Patuxent Partnership,  College of Southern Maryland, St. Mary's College of Maryland, Calvert County Chamber of Commerce/Young Professionals Network, Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland, The Better Place, the Southern Maryland Navy Alliance, and the St. Mary's County Chamber of Commerce.

As always, we look forward to near-future collaborations to take action on your inspiring ideas!

Executive Program Examines

Healthcare in Southern Maryland

Executive Program participants see the world through the eyes of seniors suffering memory loss and sensory impairment during a dementia exercise by SagePoint Senior Living Services.

The Executive Program Class of 2025 gathered at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center (Charles Regional) in La Plata on March 6 for a day-long examination of the current state of healthcare in Southern Maryland.

Participants met with the chief administrators and other senior leaders of Charles Regional, MedStar St. Mary’s, and CalvertHealth System, and with the county health officers and other key public health staff to discuss current challenges and opportunities of our healthcare system. A recurring theme continues to be workforce and financial sustainability challenges ... but also how these are met in part through collaboration with community partners. To that end, the group were taken on tours of Charles Regional, the CalvertHealth Mobile Health Unit and the H.O.P.E. (Heroin Overdose Prevention Effort) Trailer of the Charles County Sheriff's Office, in addition to going behind the scenes of Charles Regional.

The session placed special focus on mental and behavioral health in Southern Maryland. A dementia exercise by Sagepoint Senior Living Services put participants into the shoes of people living with memory loss and sensory impairment. The Maryland Coalition of Families, the St. Mary’s County Health Department Harm Reduction Program, Children's Health Matters, and the Charles County based Health Partners introduced participants to innovative mental and behavioral health programming and support services available to Southern Marylanders.

Heartfelt gratitude to session Advocates Albert Zanger, Chief Administrative Officer of the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center and Amber Starn, LSM '20, Director of Community Health & Evaluation for the Charles County Health Department. Special thanks also to Craig Renner, LSM '23 for serving as a moderator;  to Erin Farley LSM ’21, and Jeremy Bradford, Executive Program Class of 2025 for serving as presenters; and to featured Gold Sponsor, the Chesapeake-Potomac Healthcare Alliance.

LEAP's Emerging Leaders Reimagine Mentoring, Networking, and Coaching

The LEAP Class of 2025 convened on February 21 at the United States Bomb Technician Association (USBTA) facility in Indian Head for a full-day exploration of the impact of mentoring, networking, and coaching relationships on leadership development.

Our deepest gratitude to our guest speakers whose presentations and interactive activities aligned in their message that authenticity and mutually beneficial relationship are the core of genuine networking, mentoring, and coaching. With that understanding, we pursue those relationships not primarily as transactions but as opportunities for collaboration and  transformation.

It lets you choose the person you want to make healthcare decisions for you if you are not able to make them for yourself. It was written with the help of the nation's leading experts in end-of-life care. It's also easy to use. All you have to do is check a box, circle a direction or write a few sentences. Join CalvertHealth's Mobile Health Unit at one of its upcoming stops. Learn more HERE.
