LSM Executive Program Discovers the Global Impact of Southern Maryland’s Energy Sector |
BHE GT&S Director of External Affairs George Anas (center) hosts the Executive Program Class of 2025 at the BHE GT&S offices in Lusby, MD, for a brief about Cove Point LNG. |
The Leadership Southern Maryland (LSM) Executive Program went behind the scenes of the Southern Maryland energy sector on April 24th to better understand its impact on the region’s life and economy.
The day-long tour took the group to SMECO headquarters in Hughesville, where Government Affairs and Community Relations Director Natalie Cotton, LSM '10; Vice President of Government and Public Affairs Tom Dennison, LMd '12; Vice President of Electric Operations and Construction Brian Lazarchick, LMd '14; Vice President of Distributed Energy and Sustainability Lazael Rorie; and Vice President of Strategy and Innovation Ryan Edge described the cooperative’s mission, operations, sustainability efforts and future endeavors. Participants were treated to a Hot Line safety demonstration.
The executives traveled next to Constellation’s Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant where staff briefed them on nuclear energy and provided a rare walking tour of the facility. The group then traveled to BHE GT&S offices in Lusby, where Director of External Affairs George Anas informed them about the history and global operations of the Cove Point LNG plant.
A key objective of the tour was to explore the intersections of energy and protection of Southern Maryland’s distinctive natural environment that, with 1,000 miles of shoreline and more than 200,000 acres of farmland is not only vital to the region but to the world.
Special thanks to Program Advocate Jennifer Raley, LSM '23, Energy and Technology Programs Manager at SMECO for helping us design and implement such an impactful day. Heartfelt thanks, too, to SMECO for their wonderful hospitality and sponsoring breakfast and our After-Hours Social; to Constellation for sponsoring lunch; and to program sponsor BHE GT&S.

LEAP's Emerging Leaders Get to the
Heart of Servant Leadership |
Donna Sisson, LEAP '22; Edward Sullivan, Director, Calvert County Office on Aging; Tia Myers, Executive Director, East-John Youth Center; and Kelly Ward, LSM '25, Executive Director of the Solomons Mission Center share insights and guidance on servant leadership. |
The LEAP Class of 2025 gathered on May 9th at the Harriet E. Brown Community Center in Prince Frederick, for a full-day exploration of Steward Leadership and Service.
Through conversation with Maryland State Delegate Jeffrie Long (District 27B) and a lunch roundtable with servant leaders in Calvert County, participants acquired insight into the values of a steward leader: shared vision, personal mastery, understanding differences, experimentation, risk taking, and communication.
The group was scheduled to spend the afternoon volunteering with Christmas in April Calvert County, but the project had to be cancelled due to inclement weather. The class voted unanimously to reschedule the service activity for early June. Stay tuned for pics! |
