Kala Bowling, LEAP Class of 2025 (MIL); Tom Clark, LSM '18 (MIL); Travis Abeyta (MIL); Kelvin Diaz (MIL); and Sybol Anderson (LSM) of the "LSM/MIL Cyb3r S3n71n3l5" (LSM/MIL Cyber Sentinels) participated to raise awareness of cybersecurity threats ... and, yes, to bring home the prize for LSM.

Executive Program Goes to the
Heart of Southern Maryland Agriculture |
The Executive Program convened on Oct. 16 for a day-long tour and exploration of Southern Maryland agriculture. The class convened at the University of Maryland Center for Estuarine Science - Chesapeake Biological Laboratory (UMCES-CBL in Solomons, Md.
CBL Interim Director Dr. Carys Mitchelmore provided an overview of the lab’s decades-long work in fisheries science, ecosystems studies and restoration, and environmental chemistry and toxicology. Local and state agriculture specialists Caroline Trossbach (Calvert County Department of Economic Development), Sydney Garner (Charles County Economic Development Department), Priscilla Leitch (St. Mary’s County Department of Economic Development), and Martin Proulx (Maryland Department of Agriculture) followed with a survey of major features of and issues in Southern Maryland agriculture.
The group then traveled to the Loveville Produce Auction, to participate in local agriculture commerce, and to Serenity Farm in Benedict, Md., where they learned about the mission of the nonprofit Farming 4 Hunger to serve those in need of fresh food in Southern Maryland. They learned lessons in life and leadership with executive director Bernie Fowler, Jr. and his team.
Participants dug deep into intersections of agricultural industry practices and environmental sustainability efforts in an honest conversation about the 2023 Chesapeake Bay and Watershed Report Card with local farmer JR Cosgrove, LSM ‘22 (Horsmon Farm); watermen Capts. Simon and Rachel Dean (Patuxent River Seafood); environmental scientist Dr. Bill Dennison (Chesapeake Biological Laboratory); and state government representative Rachel Jones (Maryland Department of Agriculture). The report card is published by the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science to provide transparent, detailed assessments of the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed. In the 2023 assessment, the Chesapeake Watershed scored a C overall, but the Patuxent and Potomac Rivers scored D with trends in water quality not showing improvement. Participants learned about collaborative efforts among farmers, watermen, scientists, and government to protect the watershed.
"This was my favorite session so far," said Binnie VanDeVoort, international programs director at Naval Systems, Inc., in Lexington Park, Md. "I was impressed by how Farming 4 Hunger is reaching out to so many in more ways than just with food. I also enjoyed watching the auction in Loveville. I plan to return with my family." Thanks to Program Advocates Stacy Hutchinson, LSM '23, LMd '24; Julie Oberg, LSM '23; and Kevin Schmidt, LSM '23 for designing a high-impact session.
Special thanks to UMCES-CBL for sponsoring breakfast and lunch for the session. |

LSM Giving Season
December 2024 |
|
|
As we prepare to give thanks for our blessings, LSM is mindful of the gift that is our Southern Maryland community. Thank you, LSM Family and friends, for all the ways you pour into Southern Maryland all year long, making it the special community it is.
LSM exists to connect, inform, and inspire you, Southern Maryland's top professionals, to continue to work together for the good of our community. There is strength in our numbers, and we are growing!
As LSM grows, we rely increasingly on the financial support of alumni, friends, and other benefactors to succeed in our mission. In a typical year, tuition comprises roughly half (45-55%) of LSM's revenue. The remainder comes from sponsorships, donations, fundraising events, LSMAA dues, and grants.
Please consider LSM this year in your 2024 holiday and year-end giving. We truly need your support and are thankful for it. We offer you, in return, our very best effort to help build a stronger Southern Maryland. GIVING TUESDAY – DECEMBER 3 Campaign for LSM Nonprofit & Small Business Scholarships |
|
|
The vast majority of Southern Maryland nonprofits - 80% - have an annual income of less than $10,000. Every Giving Tuesday, LSM raises scholarship funds to help our nonprofit and small business leaders, who do so much for Southern Maryland, gain a seat at the LSM table.
This year, we’re raising funds for the LSM Legacy Scholarship Fund established by the Executive Program Class of 2024. For their class gift to LSM, they raised $20,657 in gifts and pledges. The class awarded two small business scholarships to members of the Executive Program and LEAP Classes of 2025. Remaining and future funds are being placed in an investment account. |
| |
|
Thank you for paying it forward for other Southern Maryland leaders! You'll get back more life-changing experiences with passionate people addressing our community’s needs.
LSM YEAR-END GIVING – THROUGH DECEMBER 31 LSM’s Giving Season continues through December 31. Your gifts enable LSM to continue delivering on our mission to connect, educate, and inspire diverse leaders, fostering collaboration to address community needs in Southern Maryland.

Executive Program Learning Soars at Naval Air Station Patuxent River |
The Executive Program Class of 2025 experienced the mission of Naval Air Station Patuxent River (NAS Pax River) on November 7.
NAS Pax River Commanding Officer CAPT Douglas Burfield, LSM ’23 welcomed the class with a morning brief about the base, along with Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) Executive Director Stephen Cricchi and Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head (NSWC IHD) Smart Arsenal Lead Andrew Coombs.
A guided windshield tour showcased the people, processes and partnerships that make up Pax River’s research, development, test and evaluation cycle. The class visited the VX-20 Test & Evaluation Squadron and the Aviation Survival Training Center, took the controls of explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) robotics from NSWC IHD, and took to the sky on
manned flight simulators. U.S. Naval Test Pilot School (TPS) instructors shared a bit of life inside the elite “schoolhouse” and guided the class on a tour of the TPS flight line.
Participants learned that they can be part of the Southern Maryland defense community. Doug Belvin, LSM '24, Dr. Dale Moore, LSM '24, Roger Cordell, LSM '18, and Pam Frank, LSM '24 invited class members to join forces with The Patuxent Partnership, the Southern Maryland Navy Alliance, the U.S. Navy League, and the Charles County Military Alliance Council, critical advocacy groups that champion Southern Maryland’s military bases, enlisted and civilian personnel, and their families.
This excellent Defense Session was organized by Program Advocates Stephanie Gleason, LSM '12, and Jennifer Brown LSM ’19.
Special thanks to featured sponsor The Patuxent Partnership, coffee sponsor the MIL Corporation, lunch sponsor Bell Flight, and after-hours social sponsor ASEC.
