LSM E-News - January 2020

Healthcare Session - January 9th

On January 9, the Class of 2020 experienced Healthcare in Southern Maryland.  The day began with a panel discussion on healthcare issues and challenges in Southern Maryland with representatives from CalvertHealth System, University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center, and MedStar St. Mary's Hospital.  The panel was facilitated by John Greely LSM'11 and Mary Hannah LSM'17, Susan Vogel LSM'09, and Lori Werrell LSM'13 were among the participants.

The group next visited Sagepoint Senior Living Services where they were welcomed by Joyce Riggs LSM'11.  They heard about the memory care services at Sagepoint and had the unique opportunity to participate in a dementia exercise that demonstrated the challenges faced by those coping with memory loss and sensory issues.

Walden’s Anchor facility in Charlotte Hall was next on the agenda.  The class received an overview of the facility and its addiction treatment programs and heard from a former program participant who shared her personal story and her path to recovery.

The healthcare session also included presentations from Health Partners, Inc’s Chrisie Mulcahey LSM’18 on medical resources for the underserved and an overview of services offered by Maryland Coalition of Families from Amy Young, a family peer support specialist.  Tours of Health Partners and the Charles County Sheriff’s Office HOPE (Heroin Overdose Prevention Effort) trailer rounded out the day.

Leadership Southern Maryland’s Emerging Leaders (LEAP) program provides educational programming opportunities to new or emerging leaders in our region. Through a series of six “experiences”, young leaders will facilitate, foster, and refine their individual leadership understanding and abilities via structured course curriculum and a focus on self-discovery, teamwork, and networking. These sessions will conclude with a capstone project and graduation in June. Experts from across the region and state representing business, government, education, and the nonprofit community will serve as panelists and guest speakers. “It’s very exciting to see this program launch, and the idea of helping new leaders grow their skills is very rewarding,” said Tom Jones, LEAP chair and 2019 LSM graduate. “It’s important that we invest our time into expanding our communities’ leaders, and I’m confident LEAP will be a great asset.”

Alumni News

LSM Board President Sam Baldwin LSM'16 has devoted six years to his work on the John Hanson Briscoe Historical Project and is pleased to announce its completion.  The final chapter to this project has just been published online at https://www.baldwinbriscoe. com/the-john-hanson-briscoe- historical-project/ . Entitled “New Leadership”, it is relevant to members of the LSM family in that it tells the story of how leaders, such as John Hanson Briscoe and Senator J. Frank Raley, used their leadership skills to modernize St. Mary’s County.

The John Hanson Briscoe Historical Project is a historical project relating the life and times of John Hanson Briscoe (1934-2014), St. Mary’s County lawyer, judge, and former Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates. Through 60-plus interviews conducted with his friends and contemporaries, and through hundreds of separate primary and secondary documents, the John Hanson Briscoe Historical Project gives readers, researchers, and history enthusiasts detailed and personal accounts of John Hanson Briscoe’s life, as well as on topics such as law and politics in Maryland, the development of St. Mary’s County and Lexington Park, and of life in Maryland and St. Mary’s County in general during the twentieth century.

LEAP 2020 class member John Houser and 2019 Teen Leadership Academy ambassador Jordan Beaton both contributed their time and efforts to the project.
