Executive Program Studies the Realities of Economic & Workforce Development |
On Oct. 8, the Executive Program Class of 2026 met with state and regional economic development leaders at the Chesapeake Hills Golf Course in Lusby, Md., to discuss Southern Maryland’s economic and workforce development challenges, opportunities, and initiatives.
Participants tuned into an honest conversation among economic development and planning directors from Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties about the realities of economic development in their jurisdictions and regionally. The class also learned about workforce development initiatives of the Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland, The Patuxent Partnership, and College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Workforce Center and reflected on the economic impact of Southern Maryland's nonprofit organizations.
One of many highlights of the day was a robust discussion of efforts to promote an entrepreneurial ecosystem in Southern Maryland with Maryland Deputy Secretary of Commerce Stephen Rice; Justin Ferguson of TEDCO; James Vasquez of the Maryland Small Business Development Center Southern Region; and Brian Jordan, President and Co-Founder of Jordan R&D. A centerpiece of the session was the opportunity for participants to "Be an Economic Developer for the Day," collaborating with others to solve real Southern Maryland economic development cases pertaining to infrastructure revitalization, diversification through the blue (agriculture) economy, and workforce development to support advanced manufacturing in our region. Special thanks to Program Advocate Sheebah Smith, LSM '24, for designing an excellent, information session; to Bob Branham, LSM '20, Director of Calvert County Parks & Recreation, for hosting us; and to Calvert County Administrator Linda Turner for bringing welcoming remarks. |
