Executive Program Explores the
Southern Maryland Healthcare System |
MedStar St. Mary's Hospital President Dr. Mimi Novello welcomes the Executive Program Class of 2026 and provides an overview of the healthcare landscape in Southern Maryland.
The Executive Program Class of 2026 gathered at MedStar St. Mary's Hospital in Leonardtown on March 5 for a day-long study of the current state of healthcare in Southern Maryland.
Participants met with the chief administrators of MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center, and CalvertHealth System, and with the county health officers and other key public health staff to discuss current challenges and opportunities of our healthcare system. The system's major challenges continue to be workforce development, financial sustainability, and increasing demands for mental and behavioral health services. The primary opportunity our health leaders continue to pursue and leverage is collaboration with each other and with regional community partners.
MedStar St. Mary's Hospital staff invited participants behind the scenes of the facility via tours guided by Jennifer Alvey, LSM '25; Ann Hawkins, LSM '21; Jessica Roberts, LSM '24; and Don Lewis, LSM '25. After the tour, Chair of Radiology Dr. Moutasem Aljundi provided the class a deeper dive into some of the innovative technologies being utilized at MedStar St. Mary's Hospital.
The session placed special focus on mental and behavioral health in Southern Maryland. A dementia exercise by Sagepoint Senior Living Services put participants into the shoes of people living with memory loss and sensory impairment. The St. Mary’s County Health Department Risk Reduction Program, MedStar Population & Community Mobile Health Unit, Children's Health Matters Program of the Mental Health Association of Maryland, Calvert County Health Department's Healthy Beginnings Program, Charles County based Health Partners, and H.O.P.E. (Heroin Overdose Prevention Effort) Trailer of the Charles County Sheriff's Office, introduced participants to innovative mental and behavioral health programming and support services available to Southern Marylanders.
Heartfelt gratitude to session Advocates Don Lewis, LSM '25, Director of Physician Services at MedStar St. Mary's Hospital and Amber Starn, LSM '20, Director of Community Health & Evaluation for the Charles County Health Department. Special thanks also to Lori Werrell, LSM '13 for serving as a moderator and presenter; to Dr. Dianna Abney, LSM '15; Jeremy Bradford, LSM '25; and Christine Mulcahey, LSM '18 for serving as presenters; and to featured Gold Sponsor, the Chesapeake-Potomac Healthcare Alliance.

LEAP's Emerging Leaders Get Real about Mentoring, Networking, and Coaching |
Left: Renesha Miles, LSM '24 facilitates a speed networking session with a group of Emerging Leaders. Right: Leslie Fazio, LSM '22 and LEAP Facilitator introduces a group to the benefits of coaching. The LEAP Class of 2026 convened on February 27 at the United States Bomb Technician Association (USBTA) facility in Indian Head for a full-day exploration of the benefits to leaders of mentoring, networking, and coaching relationships.
Our guest speakers' presentations and interactive activities aligned wonderfully in their message that authenticity and mutually beneficial relationship are the core of genuine networking, mentoring, and coaching. Pursued with that mindset, these relationships are opportunities for life-changing collaboration and personal transformation. Our deepest gratitude to our presenters:
Special thanks also to USBTA for their amazing hospitality. Chief Operating Officer Vandiver Hood welcomed the class and provided an opening brief about the great work of USBTA. And a very special shout out of gratitude to Julie Smith, LEAP Class of 2026 for providing an absolutely splendid lunch for her colleagues and our guests! |
