The main goal of the Day of Giving is to ensure the Charles County Literacy Council (CCLC) can continue providing free, one-on-one adult literacy tutoring to every resident in Charles County. This fundraising effort is essential to sustain the Council’s mission of helping individuals improve their reading, comprehension and math skills, which then provides the opportunities of achieving their goals, such as earning a GED or NEDP, obtaining a driver’s license, gaining citizenship, passing entrance exams for the military, apprenticeships, and college. By increasing literacy, CCLC empowers individuals to reach their personal goals and become better parents, family members, employees, and citizens. Functional literacy leads to greater stability for individuals, and this stability strengthens the social and moral fabric of the entire Charles County community. When more community members can read and understand information, everyone benefits— from families to workplaces to local organizations. CCLC’s financial needs are real, and community support is necessary to keep this vital, free service available. By participating in the Day of Giving, donors directly help adults in Charles County build literacy. The Day of Giving also plays a critical role in providing the resources needed for both students and volunteer tutors. These funds help supply instruction materials and support the volunteers who dedicate their time to help others succeed.
